Here, we will utilize the Automatic grouping function to hide a bunch of stuff at once! Hammer will automatically group certain things into VisGroups. You should utilize them on your own maps to keep the editing process manageable when the map gets large and complicated. VisGroups are a nice way to handle the different elements of a complex map. The easiest way to hide all that colorful trash is to utilize VisGroups. This is fine, everybody wants to know about that stuff. Hide all the garbage using VisGroups! At this early stage (maybe) of your mapping career, you probably aren't looking to see an impenetrable fortress of skip/hint/clip brushes, but the actual geometry and other important features of the map. Opening the plain de_inferno.vmf file opens the map, sure, but it is being referenced as an instance, and as such you can't edit, look at properties, or anything else to figure out how the pros did it, but allows you to check out (some of) the official maps to see a great example of how to make eye-catching, optimized, well-made maps. There ya go! That's the correct map to open. Go to the Instances folder, then the de_inferno folder (or de_train, or whatever map it is you want to open), and then open de_inferno_main.vmf (or de_train_main.vmf, or whatever map name _main.vmf).
